Dairy

Nutrition is one of the most important factors in the health, production and profitability of a lactating dairy cow. Specific areas of health linked to production can be targeted by nutrition ie mastitis, fertility, lameness and milk yield and milk quality.

In addition to providing an ideal nutritional balance for each cow, dairy rations should make economic sense and be balanced on a cost per litre basis.

The importance of good nutrition in dairy cattle is essential and to have a basic understanding of how cows digest feed, what factors affect feed intake, how to monitor and utilise feeding programs at different stages of lactation and how to identify nutrionally related problems in relation to body condition score. This expertise will help to prevent health problems and maximise production and profitability.

Lameness is one of the most underestimated and costly health and welfare issues to affect dairy cattle. It is well accepted that without a correctly implemented action plan to counteract this problem in its initial stages, the cows well being, reproductive capabilities and milk yields will be severely affected. Early diagnosis, coupled with preventative measures will diminish this wide-spread problem.

Nutrition and foot bathing play an extremely important role in the control of the many causes of lameness. Emphasis should be based on prevention rather than treatment.

The pain and reduction in mobility results in reduced food intake, loss of body condition, lowered milk yield or loss of liveweight in growing animals.

The TendaHoof™ System balances the excesses and deficiencies of minerals and protein in the grass via the TendaHoof™ Lick and with the TendaHoof™ Solution which is administered through the TendaHoof™ Mat which also ensures that your animals have a regular hoof cleansing.

To reduce the incidence of lameness:

  • Look out for signs of acidosis which can lead to lameness
  • Reduce stress levels in cows

TendaHoof™ Solution contains zinc and organic acids which work in conjunction with the added surfactants to cleanse the hooves through anti-bacterial action.

TendaHoof™ Solution is available in 25 litre and 200 litre containers.

  • Concentrated and easy to mix liquid (Use at 3 litres in TendaHoof™ System with water)
  • Suitable for all breeds and ages of cattle
  • Can be diluted for individual application by spraying as part of foot trimming routine (10:1 with water)
  • Lowers the pH of the footbath which reduces the presence of micro-organisms (25:1 in footbath)
  • Zinc helps to strengthen, condition and harden the hoof
  • Increased penetration due to the surface-active agent and wetting agents
  • Quick acting
  • Remains active in soiled conditions – organic acids are still effective in soiled water, although footbaths should be cleaned regularly

For a ruminant to perform most effectively the rumen needs to be the focus of attention.

High starch diets can lead to a build up of damaging lactic acid in the rumen which may lead to acidosis and an increased incidence of lameness. TendaHoof™ FX is designed to encourage the development of a beneficial rumen microflora and the maintenance of a stable rumen pH. Improved rumen stability aids feed digestibility and promotes improved productivity. A readily available form of zinc contributes to tissue repair in the hoof and udder and helps counteract the negative effect of high starch diets on productivity and hoof condition.

When fed to dairy cows TendaHoof™ FX

  • Increases feed intakes
  • Improves milk yield and milk quality
  • Earlier lactation peaks
  • Reduced incidence of acidosis, lameness and cud spilling
  • An improvement in keratin production which means that teat end closure is quicker
  • More effective udder and hoof tissue repair
  • Somatic Cell Counts are typically reduced by 20%

Dose rate:

2 weeks pre-calving
7g/cow/day

Early lactation
7g/cow/day

100 days in lactation
7g/cow/day

TendaHealth™

TendaHealth™ is an esential chelated trace element and vitamin booster used pre-calving, at bulling and in problematic cows to improve calving ease, increase disease resistance and improve conception rates.

TendaHealth™ is specifically formulated to balance deficiencies of forage and minimise the negative effects of antagonists ie iron, molybdenums and sulphur.

Growth rates and health are critical and farmers know all too well that poorer animals never catch up with their contemporaries. TendaHealth™ is a booster to the immune system for all animals whether they are one week old calves, purchased cattle or finishing cattle at grass.

Fundamentally the garlic and the yeast are the key ingredients in the whole mix that seems to stimulate a reaction in the gut that boost nutrient absorption.

Increasing evidence shows the benefits of yeast and garlic in animal diets not only in terms of increased utilisation of trace elements but also to improve growth rates and resistance to disease and infections including worms.

Cows deficient in essential trace elements have:

  • Retained cleansing
  • Whites
  • Poor appetite
  • Do not cycle regularly
  • Embryo reabsorption

Dose rate: 100 ml TendaHealth™ at 3 weeks pre calving, at calving and/or service.

TendaHealth™ has a 7 day milk withdrawl for lactating cows.

Heifers deficient in essential trace elements:

  • Do not cycle regularly
  • May not hold to service
  • Have extended calving period 6- 12 weeks = more calving problems
  • Reabsorb embyos 6-10 weeks after service
  • Limit 1st lactation production and returning to bull

Dose rate:

70 ml TendaHealth™ 3 weeks prior to service
100 ml TendaHealth™ 3 weeks prior to calving

Calves born from cows deficient in essential trace elements are more susceptible to infections and diseases:

  • Disease
  • Infections
  • Non sucking
  • Poor “doers”

Calf dose rate:

50 ml of Tendahealth
or 10ml of TendaHealth for 5 consecutive days by dosing or via milk

RuMeN FX™

RuMeN FX™ is the market leader in protected live yeast. RuMeN FX™ creates a healthier more efficient rumen, which promotes feed intake and better feed utilisation, ultimately leading to more healthy, more productive and more contented animals.

Only RuMeN FX™ has the stability that means more yeast cells reach the rumen alive, making RuMeN FX™ the most cost effective live yeast available.

Why feed RuMeN FX™?

There are huge benefits to be gained from adding small quantities of live yeast to livestock rations. RuMeN FX™ is the most cost effective live yeast on the market due to the unique manufacturing process that protects the live yeast core from heat, moisture and acid by a layer of dead yeast cells. This means that more live yeast cells reach the rumen alive.

RuMeN FX™ creates a healthier, more efficient rumen, which promotes higher intakes and better feed utilisation, ultimately leading to more productive, healthy and contented animals.

It works by stabilising rumen pH and reducing the build up of lactic acid, which causes acidosis. It increases energy production and microbial protein synthesis, reduces rumen oxygen content and stimulates the growth of rumen organisms that digest fibre and starch, thus increasing feed intake and helping efficient digestion.

Feeding RuMeN FX™ gives you:

  • Increased Dry Matter Intakes (DMIs)
  • Reduced incidences of acidosis, lameness and cud balls
  • Improved fertility with less repeats due to better rumen efficiency
  • More content animals

Testimonial

Graham Williams milks a pedigree herd of 170 Holsteins at Trostra Farm, Glascoed, Pontypool where he runs an embryo transfer programme to increase his genetic pace. He sells the surplus stock. Focus on herd health is paramount to his business.

Graham is convinced that the TendaHoof FX™ system is working hand in hand in all animal health aspects. "For that reason I will be continuing with the product especially as the cost at approximately £30 a lactation per cow seems an excellent investment."
